The Eden Engine: movement and upgrades
The Eden Engine gives the train its forward movement, while upgrades are described as helping it outpace the horrors pursuing it. That is progression in mobility, distinct from the day-to-day fuel and power requirements. Because the base travels, storage and crafting facilities can accompany the journey rather than remaining at one settlement. The official material describes the purpose of upgrading the engine, but leaves the upgrade sequence and travel performance unspecified.
Fuel and power: operating the Eden Engine
Fuel and power management are the operating side of the Eden Engine. Steam explicitly asks players to fuel the engine, manage its power and operate the train to explore farther. Keeping the train running is therefore a different question from adding a new carriage or workshop. The public description does not identify fuel types, consumption rates or a power-allocation interface. Our resources overview separates operating needs from equipment and construction uses.
Carriages: expanding the mobile base
Additional carriages expand the train’s physical base. Steam connects this expansion with crafting stations and storage: the carriage provides space for facilities, while each facility has its own purpose. Reinforced walls and weapon stations address protection instead of storage or production. This distinction is useful when reading future upgrade announcements: more space, more equipment and stronger defenses describe different kinds of progress.
Storage
Storage gives supplies a role beyond the place where they were found. Resources return to the train, where they can be considered alongside equipment, workshop and expansion needs. Steam names additional storage among the train’s expansion options. It does not establish container sizes or shared-inventory permissions. See resource purposes for the distinction between finding supplies and choosing a use for them.
Workshops
Crafting stations make the train a production base as well as transport. Steam associates these facilities with additional carriages; the May development report separately introduces dedicated repair workstations. Making new equipment and maintaining existing items are therefore two documented activities with different roles. The crafting guide brings those facilities together without assuming a universal station or recipe list.
Defense
The store describes reinforced walls and crafted weapon stations as parts of a moving fortress. In the May 13, 2026 development update, the team also said train defense encounters had been integrated into obstacle-clearing gameplay. This adds a concrete connection between travel and combat: clearing the way and defending the train can belong to the same encounter, rather than being unrelated activities. The announcement does not specify obstacle types or encounter triggers. Read the development report and equipment overview for the dated context.
Relics: discoveries that return to the train
The May 13, 2026 update describes Relics as dungeon discoveries that players activate aboard the train for temporary buffs during the journey. Their importance is the connection between an expedition and the mobile base: finding a relic and using it happen in different places. Relics are not presented here as ordinary crafting ingredients. The announcement leaves individual effects, duration and stacking unspecified; follow underground exploration for their discovery setting.
| Stage | Official description | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Discover | Find powerful Relics hidden in dungeons. | Underground locations |
| Activate | Activate the discovery aboard the train. | An expedition has a use back at the mobile base. |
| Benefit | Receive temporary buffs during the journey. | The announcement describes a system, not an item-by-item effect list. |
The train as a working survival base
Transport, supplies, production and protection meet aboard the same train. An expedition brings discoveries back to a base that can itself expand and move. The table connects these functions without implying a required upgrade order; individual sections explain the differences.
| Function | What happens aboard | Connected question |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | Operate and upgrade the Eden Engine to continue through the wasteland. | Engine progression |
| Capacity | Add carriages and storage as the train expands. | Returning with supplies |
| Production | Carry crafting facilities; the May update also describes repair workstations. | Crafting and maintenance |
| Protection | Reinforce walls and build weapon stations; development work links defense encounters to clearing obstacles. | Train defense |
| Relics | Activate dungeon discoveries aboard for temporary buffs, as described in May. | Relics |

Train progression: core systems versus future additions
The Steam Early Access answers distinguish the core systems described on the store from later development goals. More loot, crafted items, weapons and train upgrades are planned alongside additional biomes and dungeons. Read Early Access plans for that roadmap; the sections here explain what each announced train system does.
| Scope | Announced role | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Core train functions | Travel, fuel and power management, defense, crafting and storage. | Gameplay loop |
| Progression plans | Additional train upgrades, crafted items, weapons and loot. | Early Access development |
| World plans | More biomes, unique locations and dungeons to visit. | Locations |

How to compare the announced upgrades
Read an announced upgrade by its function: engine upgrades support movement, storage holds supplies, workshops support production and defensive additions protect the train. An upgrade ranking would also need costs, unlock conditions and encounter data that the official overview does not provide. The crafting comparison explains the available choices by purpose rather than assigning an unsupported best-first order.
