What kind of game is Frostrail?

Frostrail is a survival crafting first-person shooter from FakeFish, published by Shiro Unlimited. Players travel through a frozen, corrupted world alone or in online co-op. The defining link is the armored train: it transports the group, carries supplies and facilities, and acts as the mobile refuge from which exploration begins.

Explore. Scavenge. Return. Build.

Explore beyond the tracks, scavenge supplies, face environmental and enemy threats, then connect those discoveries with equipment and the train. Crafting and upgrades support the continuing journey, which creates new reasons to explore. This loop explains why the game’s exploration, survival and construction systems belong together.

  • Explore abandoned settlements, wreckage and underground spaces for supplies.
  • Manage exposure to cold and hostile encounters while away from the train.
  • Bring the purpose of your supplies into focus: equipment, crafting or train expansion.
  • Develop storage, workshops, defenses and the engine as the journey continues.

Your base travels with you

The base travels with the journey instead of remaining at a single settlement. Steam describes engine upgrades, additional carriages, storage, crafting stations and defenses. Each serves a different function aboard the same train. The train overview explains how those functions connect without assuming a fixed upgrade order.

The cost of leaving the train

Leaving the train opens access to supplies, but also exposes the player to cold, blizzards and hostile spaces. The store presents this as a choice between accepting danger for supplies and remaining in refuge without them. Survival explains the environmental pressures; expeditions follows their place in the outward and return journey.

Tutorials, progression and multiple exits

The May 13, 2026 development update described a new tutorial level, additional tutorial objectives, progression carried between levels and new levels with multiple exit points. These are dated development details, not a guarantee about launch-day saves, progression rules or a finished world map. The same update discussed changes to dungeons and the tundra; see locations for that context.

Solo and online co-op

Steam lists single-player and online co-op. Both fit the announced loop of traveling, exploring and preparing aboard the train. Questions about the player cap, crossplay, split-screen and dedicated servers have separate evidence requirements; find their current answers in solo and co-op.
