Who are the Penitent Gardeners?

The Penitent Gardeners are the group at the heart of Frostrail’s premise. Aboard an armored, steam-powered train, they travel through the frozen land in search of salvation, granting mercy to the lost and confronting the cursed. Their name identifies their place in the story; details of selectable characters are addressed separately below.

The Emperor and the ruined empire

Steam describes a once-mighty empire made barren by unrelenting cold. The Emperor’s pact with the Void is named as the source of its corruption, and revenants haunt the ruins. This establishes a background relationship between the ruler, the pact and the world the Gardeners travel through.

What is the Void?

The Void is the named counterpart in the Emperor’s pact. Its importance in the public premise is that connection to the corrupted empire. Steam does not elaborate a full cosmology or a player ability system around it. The world resulting from that pact supplies the setting for exploration and survival.

Revenants and the threats in the snow

Official material names revenants and eldritch horrors as threats in the ruined world. The Steam mature-content description also refers to fighting creatures such as wolves and humanoids. These descriptions are not a complete bestiary. No verified enemy health values, resistances, boss roster or combat rankings are available in the sources used here. Read weapons and gear for the distinction between carried equipment and train defenses.

Are there playable characters or classes?

A named playable roster or class system has not been established by the reviewed sources. The Penitent Gardeners are a group in the premise; the clothing sets mentioned in May do not by themselves establish classes or abilities. For confirmed play modes, see solo and co-op.

Where to explore next

The lore provides context for the settlements and underground ruins where exploration takes place. Use the locations overview for environment categories, weapons and gear for equipment roles, and gameplay for the relationship between the train and the world around it.
